The Finke Estate preserves, researches, and opens Dieter Finke's archive. It connects works, documents, and reconstruction notes so the practice can be read as a living field.
Painted in the late 1980s during Finke’s New York 12th Street studio years, this acrylic on plywood painting is the most important work in the Estate’s holdings from Finke’s Sculpture and Painting series featuring the Caribbean Queen figure.
The Caribbean Queen recurs across Finke’s practice, appearing in the Haubachstrasse standing-figure paintings of the late 1980s and later in the bronze Caribbean Queen of 1992. Here, the figure is built from stacked, curling brushwork rather than defined by an outline. She emerges from the golden ground as gesture and mass rather than depiction, anticipating the guardian and threshold figures of Finke’s later sculpture.
